Pokémon of the Forest
Wake up in a tiny wooded town and choose your first partner.
A first-person, cozy-life reimagining of the opening of Pokémon LeafGreen through an Animal-Crossing lens. Wake up in a sun-drenched forest town whose sky, sun, season, and wildlife track your real-world clock — dawn glows warm at 6am, dusk turns pink at 7pm, foliage cycles spring blossom, summer green, autumn amber, and winter frost across the year. A meadow rotates ten bug species by hour, season, and rarity; a swing-the-net catch loop pays out bells; a Tab-toggled Bug Book tracks progress with filter tabs, sort options, a search box, and a Share button that composes a downloadable 1080-pixel collection poster. Every texture is baked procedurally, every model sculpted from primitives, and every sound synthesised in-browser — the entire world builds from code in roughly 20 seconds on first load and ships no binary art assets.

How to play
Controls
- Click the scene to lock the pointer, or drag if the browser refuses pointer lock.
- WASD walks, Shift runs, Space jumps, and the mouse looks around.
- Left click or tap swings the net; E interacts with objects and confirms catches.
- Tab opens the Bug Book; Esc closes any panel or releases the cursor.
Game features
- Real-time day-night cycle with four seasons that shape which species appear
- Ten-bug catch loop with rarity tiers, a bells wallet, and localStorage persistence
- Tab-toggled Bug Book with filter tabs, sort options, search, and a downloadable share poster
- Fully procedural world — every texture, model, and sound is generated in the browser at load time
Current limitations
- First-time load compiles the entire world from code and takes roughly 20 seconds; subsequent visits reuse the cached bundle.
- Pointer lock is required for the smoothest camera control; browsers that refuse it fall back to a drag-to-look mode.
- Progress saves locally in this browser only — there is no cloud sync for the bells wallet or the Bug Book collection.

Zero art assets — building every polygon, texture, and shader in code
Pokémon of the Forest ships no GLB files, no PNG textures, no baked normal maps. Every creature is marching-cubes-meshed from Wyvill metaballs at boot; every leaf is a 2D-canvas Bézier fill baked into a CanvasTexture; every terrain patch is an analytic heightfield sampled onto a PlaneGeometry; every skin material is a MeshPhysicalMaterial with a custom subsurface-wrap term injected via onBeforeCompile. This post walks the seven techniques that let a browser game with ~24k lines of TypeScript render Pallet Town without downloading a single texture.Keep playing
